Still Active? YES!!
I happen to pass by the site and noticed very little activity, and thought this may show a lull in FreeMED development. This however is not true. Those who have shown interest in FreeMED development were invited to a private forum. Thus, most of us don't have time to post twice. Regardless, there has been a flurry of activity on 0.9. A lot of discussion on the user interface has been going on. Much effort is being made in providing the next release of FreeMED to be a user centric application, with what is hoped to be the most intuitive and cohesive interface yet. If you've wandered over to the development demo you can see some of the rough plan. (Although very much a work in progress). And most of the interface still needs to be re-written, as 0.9 is changing the front-end user interface to Google Web Toolkit (GWT). The key to UI is and always will be determining what the user needs and wants to do.
Long story short. . .We're working. . .working. . .working.:)

I completely bypassed FreeMED earlier this year as the site support forum was principally inactive, with many of the responses to the few support requests being snarky or unfriendly. The documentation for the released version does not appear to be vaguely complete, so support and discussion would seem to be critical to building the community. Is conducting development and discussion behind closed doors a way to accomplish that? For example, I was prepared to submit a patch to the forum correcting errors in the packaged 0.8.4 version, but if the code base has moved so far from that, it now appears that would be a waste of time. Given there is no public forum for discussion of current development, it looks like public development on this project may not actually be "Active".
I am sorry to be so pessimistic about the project's development philosophy, but my effort in trying to get a basic installation of the packaged 0.8.4 release working has been a great frustration with no obviously good choice for assistance. As an experienced participant in IT-centric open source projects, I am disheartened.
I encourage the participants in the closed development community for this project to reconsider opening up, releasing more frequently, and maintaining the released version so that it may be usable.
Thanks for enduring my rant. :-)
